GCDC: Epic, Cryptic, Crytek, Vicious Cycle Talk Engine Tech

August 24, 2007

There are some good questions from audience members, as well as some
things for people that do mods.  Worth the read.

An Engine Panel at the 2007 GCDC examined the benefits and challenges of
licensing an engine versus deciding to build ones own, and addressed
questions to ask during the decision process and what to look for in
support after the decision has been made.

Gamasutra: Western Perspectives On Japanese Game Development

April 26, 2007

Gamasutra has a great article on Western Perspectives on Japanese game development.  FTA: "The structure and design methods of Japanese developers are radically
different than in North America and Europe. Moreover, in most Japanese
game studios, there are only a handful of non-Japanese workers."
Definitely worth reading.

Gamasutra article: Are Games Art? (Here We Go Again…)

March 16, 2007

Gamasutra has a great article titled "Are Games Art? (Here We Go Again…)" which delves into just that.  I enjoyed it, since it gave a lot of opinions form people in the industry.

d’artiste: Character Modeling 2

March 13, 2007

d’artiste: Character Modeling 2 is available for pre-order from Ballistic Publishing.  The release is set for May 2007.  I have quite a few of the Ballistic Publishing books and they are well worth the money.  I don’t know about $145.00 for the Collectors Edition, $55.00 for the slip cased edition is well worth it.

New Cyrsis videos

March 9, 2007

Crysis-online.com, an unofficial Crysis fan site has linked to two videos from the GDC 2007.  These videos show just how killer the graphics are going to look in the game, along with the development tools.  When modders get their hands on that kit, I’m guessing there are going to be some crazy looking levels out there.

Design Document for “Play With Fire”

February 21, 2007

Gamasutra has taken International Hobo’s Chris Bateman’s game design document for "Play with Fire" that was released for the PC by Manifesto Games and put it up for all to see.  The document is pretty long (5 pages) and extremely detailed.  If you’re thinking about designing your own game, this may be a good template to start off with.

Gentle Giant and Halo

February 18, 2007

Although I ran across this a bit late, it looks like Gentle Giant has partnered up with Microsoft and Bungie to create figures that span will span the whole series.  You can get some more specifics HERE.

Q & A with Michel Kripalani

January 29, 2007

Gamasutra has a nice interview with Michel Kripalani, the senior games industry manager for Autodesk.  He talks about MAX and Maya, where they’re heading in the future, etc.  Relatively short article, but good content in my opinion.

Interesting article on game play design.

January 25, 2007

I ran across THIS article on Gamasutra.  It’s a very interesting read if you like game design concepts.  I love games myself, so anything that has to do with the design of them is interesting.  Whether it’s concept art, AI design/pathing, physics, etc., I find it fascinating.

You think YOU are a gamer?

January 15, 2007

Check out these game room setups.  A couple are cool, and a couple are just plain nasty.  I’m wondering if they were pictures after the gamer kicked the bucket from sitting for too long.
